Marry me John (2018)
This body of work is inspired by John Chaimberlain’s massive metal sculptures. Seeing them at the Dia Beacon, I was immediately fascinated by the bends, shapes, colors and reflections in the metals and car parts. The contrasting colors, reflections and rusty bits for me transcended something absolutely solid and rigid, to entities with dynamic characters and soul, some of the sculptures seem to contain or even be etheric bodies. A total contradiction when you think of the materials used. In much of my work I use flow, and spontaneous processes in which creatures, flowers and patterns appear that for me are very much etheric and lack the solid foundation the metals in Chaimberlain’s sculptures provide. With this work I tried to add the solid components of the Chamberlains sculptures, the bends, twists, shapes and colors on to the canvas while preserving the elements of flow and spontaneity. The result for me are surprising dances of intertwined structures and colors, where reflection and gloss contrasted on the flat house paint may emphasize a sculptural element.
